I interviewed Reem from Bojahn recently about Bohahn
Why did you decide to manufacture sleepwear?
What were your reasons for establishing an online shop rather than an outside store?
How did you start your business?
It all started with a bunch of designs and ideas in my head. I started sketching which then led to making samples and then my first range was created. With the support and encouragement of friends and family I was then motivated to start my own online boutique.
What do you focus on when you market your store?
I focus on my target market and what is the most effective way to grab their attention without breaking the bank.
What have you learned from your business?
You learn A LOT running your own business and I’m still learning! Throwing yourself into an a completely new industry is a real eye opener. Designing is the easiest aspect and the most enjoyable. The steps to make that design into a reality is always a challenge (well for me it was). Being a small business is hard to get your foot in the door for others (eg manufactures) to take you on. I also think with the left side of my brain so all the technicalities like accounting is a continuous learning process for me.
What have been your best experiences in the business?
Your first sale (that isn’t from a family member or a friend) is such an exciting feeling. Design is such a personal thing to me so when others appreciate it is a very overwhelming experience. I’ve been blessed to have been invited to showcase my label for Nolcha as part of London fashion week and that was one of the most memorable and defining moments for me and my label. Very surreal.
You must have lots of tips for entrepreneurs who are just beginning?
Where to start! It is a continuous learning process but I guess the most important thing I would say is to have passion and conviction in your endeavours as that passion is what will motivate you through the tough times and will give you a real high when you succeed.
This one is for fun, really. Who is your favourite fashion designer?
I have lots of favourites but if I had to pick one it would be Chanel (Karl Lagerfeld). Chanel to me is the epitome of femininity and sophistication.
